Enter the world of Art with the Montclair Art Museum and you will find a wide array of exhibits, eudcational materials and collections to keep you interested.  The museum will be displaying the Works from the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection (until January 2, 2011).  This exhibit of Minimal and Conceptual art is part of the Fifty Works for Fifty States initiative.  The Montclair Art Museum is the only museum in New Jersey to be chosen as a recipient of this display by the National Gallery of Art’s.  Primarily a collection of drawings, the 2,500 Vogel donations also include paintings, sculptures, photographs, and prints by more than 170 contemporary artists, mainly working in the United States.  MAM’s collection includes works by Stephen Antonakos (b. 1926), Will Barnet (b. 1911), Robert Barry (b. 1936), Lynda Benglis (b. 1941), Bill Jensen (b. 1945), Edda Renouf (b. 1943), and Richard Tuttle (b. 1941). At MAM, this exhibition will explore the themes of philanthropy and collecting.

The Engaging with Nature: American and Native American Artists (A.D. 1200 – 2004) is the first exhibition ever presented by the Museum which integrates American and Native American art encompassing all time periods and around a centralized theme.  There are 40 works in the exhibition with a variety of art and artifacts.  There are some prehistoric Native American ceramics and some historical 29th century landscape paintings and then contemporary staged photographs.  It will certainly keep your attention while you visit this exhibit.  The exhibit will end on September 25, 2011 so be sure to get there before then.
One of the collections on display is of Native American Art wich was initiated by Mrs. Henry Lang, one of the founders of the Museum.  Here you will learn about the cultural development of various peoples from the seven major culture areas in the US.  There are more than 4000 objects for you to see and enjoy.
Visit the McCullen family Gallery to view the American art from the mid-eighteenth century through the end of the nineteenth century.  You will see the emergence from the Colonial period to the American Renaissance era. 
You can visit the Marion Mann Roberts Gallery of Modern & Contemporary Art which originally opened in 1931.  This area is devoted to rotating selections of modern and contemporary art from the early twentieth century to the present.  The dramatic contrast between urban and nature will make you delighted that you took the time to visit this particular area.
If you are interested in researching the works of Morgan Russell you will want to make sure you visit the Museum since it is the premier repository for the art and papers of his dating from 1886 – 1953.  Here you will see thousands of works on paper (in various media from graphite to watercolor); six oil paintings; two rare examples of sculpture; scores of sketchbooks and notebooks; thousands of pages of correspondence; and more than 300 photographs of Russell, his work (including exhibition installations), his family, friends and associates, and his French studio—as well as many additional documents. The collection is a unique record of the complexities of Russell’s aesthetic and intellectual adventures.

Admission $12 nonmember adults, $10 for seniors (65+) and students with I.D. Credit cards accepted. MAM admission is free for Members and children under 12. Museum galleries are free for everyone the First Friday of every month.

Photography of any kind is prohibited in the Museum galleries.
All entrances and public areas at the Museum are wheelchair accessible.  The front doors at the South Mountain Ave. entrance are automated for wheelchair access.
